The mother of podicherry had an intension of constructing a town where people of all coutries can live in harmony by leaving behing all politics races and creeds. As a result Aurovile or ‘The City of Dawn’, came in to existence in the year 1968. It is also called ‘The International Township for Harmony’. Consisting of 50 settlements it spread across 20 sq.km.
The main attraction is the Matri mandir. It is considered to be the the place to wake ones consciousness. It is decorated with light giving a peaceful looks.The globe of the Matri Mandir is supported by four great pillars which symbolize four deity form of Goddess Shakthi they are Maheshwari, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasarawathi. The globe is the centre of a lotus shaped structure made up of red sand stones which is centered with an Urn which is filled with sand brought from different parts of world. A circular pathway inside the temple leads in to a meditation hall which contains the biggest crystal in world weighing 600g brought from Germany. The meditation halls around Matri Mandir are stone petals with 12 different colors each symbolizing the attitude towards divine and humanity. One more important thing is the Banyan tree which forms the centre of Aurovile.
